Details of the New Residence Pathways (Effective August 2026)
The changes introduce two new pathways under the SMC, which are designed to better recognize long-term skilled workers and those in high-value trade roles.
1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway
This route focuses on skilled professionals who have substantial experience both internationally and in New Zealand, and who are earning a high salary.
| Requirement | Detail |
| Role Type | Skilled role (ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3). |
| Experience (Total) | At least 5 years of directly relevant skilled work experience globally. |
| Experience (NZ) | Including at least 2 years of skilled work experience in New Zealand. |
| Wage Threshold | Must be paid at or above 1.1 times the median wage in New Zealand during the required NZ work experience period. |
| Exclusions | Occupations on the “Red List” will be excluded from this pathway. |
2. Trades and Technician Pathway
This pathway is created to support the retention of skilled migrants in technical and trade roles.
| Requirement | Detail |
| Role Type | Specified trades or technician roles (ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3). |
| Qualification | A relevant Level 4 or higher qualification (at least 120 points). |
| Experience (Total) | At least 4 years of post-qualification directly relevant skilled work experience globally. |
| Experience (NZ) | Including 18 months of work in New Zealand. |
| Wage Threshold | Must be paid at or above the median wage in New Zealand during the required NZ work experience period. |
SMC Application Procedure (Current & Future)
While the qualification criteria are changing, the fundamental application process for the SMC Resident Visa remains the same:
Step 1: Meet Core Requirements
Before submitting, all applicants must meet the following mandatory requirements:
- Age: Be aged 55 or younger.
- Job Offer: Have an acceptable skilled job or job offer with an Accredited Employer in New Zealand.
- Health and Character: Meet all health and character requirements (e.g., provide police certificates, undergo medical/chest X-ray examinations).
- English Language: Demonstrate that you can speak and understand English.
Step 2: Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)
This is the official first step:
- You confirm you meet the base eligibility criteria and the required points (under the current system) or pathway requirements (under the new August 2026 system).
- You can submit the EOI online via the INZ website. There is no fee for submitting an EOI.
- If you are claiming points for an overseas qualification, you may need an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
Step 3: Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
- If your EOI meets the criteria, you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for the residence visa.
- You will then have 4 months to complete the full application and provide all supporting evidence (passports, photos, health/police certificates, and evidence to support your claimed points/pathway).
Key Policy Simplifications
- Reduced New Zealand Work Experience: The maximum required New Zealand work experience to gain the final points/eligibility for residency has been reduced from three years to a maximum of two years for most paths.
Simplified Wage Assessment: The requirement for migrants to earn an increased wage rate when applying for residence has been removed. Migrants will only need to maintain the relevant skilled wage rate (e.g., median wage or 1.1x median wage, depending on the pathway) throughout the entire required period of New Zealand work experience.
