STOCKHOLM: Sweden is planning to introduce significantly stricter conditions for Family Immigration. The proposed changes aim to make the country’s regulatory framework more restrictive and purposeful.

These key changes are outlined in the government’s investigative report, SOU 2025:95, “Stricter Conditions for Family Immigration,” which was published on September 5, 2025. The changes are proposed to come into effect on January 1, 2027. However, the proposed waiting period will not apply to cases initiated before this date. The proposals will now proceed to government and parliamentary review.

Key Proposed Changes at a Glance:

  • Sponsor Requirements (The Family Member in Sweden):
    • For Swedish or Nordic citizens to act as sponsors, residency in Sweden is still required.
    • For individuals with temporary residence permits to act as sponsors, it is proposed that the permit must be valid for at least one year, there must be well-founded prospects of being granted permanent residence, and the person must be residing in Sweden.
  • Restrictions on Family Circle:
    • The rules are proposed to become more restrictive, granting greater opportunity to deny residence permits in certain cases for relatives planning to marry or cohabit.
  • Tightened Maintenance Requirement:
    • The maintenance requirement for family immigration is proposed to be tightened and will now also apply when applying for an extension of residence permits.
    • Crucially: During an extension application, family members’ incomes should also be considered when assessing if the requirement is met.
    • Exceptions to the requirement are limited and, in some cases, require exceptional reasons.
  • Impact on Specific Categories:
    • Researchers and Labour Immigrants: The maintenance requirement will also apply when their relatives apply for an extension.
    • Age Limit for Children: For relatives of individuals with work permits in Sweden, the age for accompanying children included in the application is lowered from 21 to 18 years.

The proposals could have significant consequences for individuals and businesses affected by family immigration. Clear communication will be essential for a smooth transition.
